Apart from allowing you to surmise the opportunity asking questions will also able you to impress your interviewer with your level of interest and communication skills. It is also a chance for you to relax as they will be doing most of the talking.

Stock questions you should have in your repertoire include:

  • When did you (interviewer) start with the company and in what capacity?
  • Why has this position become available?
  • Why isn’t this position being filled internally?
  • How does the company reward and retain its staff?

If you feel confident you can ask tougher questions but delivery is important. Avoid peppering your interview with curly questions as it will make them think twice about you:

  • What makes this a great company and what is happening to make it better?
  • How will my performance be evaluated and feed back given?
  • How do you propose to develop my skills and advance my career?
  • When people leave this company what reasons do they give?
  • Is there a structured induction into the company?
